What makes a password strong

Strength comes from how many possibilities there are, measured in bits of entropy — each extra bit doubles the guessing effort.

ExampleApprox. strength
8 lowercase letters~38 bits — minutes for a fast rig
12 mixed letters + digits~71 bits — strong
16 of every character type100+ bits — practically uncrackable

Use it well

  • Use a different password for every site.
  • Store them in your browser or a password manager.
  • Turn on two-factor authentication wherever you can.

Passwords come from your browser's cryptographic random generator (crypto.getRandomValues) and are never stored or sent anywhere.

FAQ

Is my password saved anywhere?

No. It's created in your browser and vanishes when you close the page.

A site won't accept symbols.

Untick symbols and add 2–4 characters to keep similar strength.

Are word passwords safe?

Yes — four or more randomly chosen words are strong and easy to remember. Use them as generated rather than hand-picking words.
