When to use each
| Method | Example | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Base64 | hello → aGVsbG8= | Email attachments, auth headers, data URIs |
| URL encoding | a b&c → a%20b%26c | Spaces and symbols in web addresses |
| HTML entities | <b> → <b> | Showing code as text on a web page |
| Unicode escape | é → \u00e9 | JavaScript/JSON strings |
encodeURIComponent vs encodeURI
The default encodes everything including ?, & and / — right for a single query value. Enable “whole URL” to keep an address's structure intact.
Base64 is not encryption. Anyone can decode it, so never use it to hide passwords.
FAQ
My Base64 differs from another site.
We encode text as UTF-8 first. Legacy systems using other encodings will produce different output.
What is URL-safe Base64?
It swaps + and / for - and _ and drops trailing =, so it's safe in URLs and file names. JWTs use it.
