Why HEIC won't open
HEIC (HEIF) has been the iPhone's default photo format since iOS 11. It's about half the size of a JPG at similar quality, but Windows, older apps and many upload forms can't open it.
Shoot JPG on your iPhone
Go to Settings → Camera → Formats and choose “Most Compatible” to save JPGs from now on. Or set Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC to “Automatic” to convert when copying by cable.
About speed
Decoding HEIC is heavy work — expect 1–5 seconds per photo. Because it all happens on your computer, your family photos are never uploaded.
FAQ
What about Live Photos or multi-image HEIC files?
We convert the primary image. The motion part of a Live Photo is a separate MOV file and isn't converted.
Is location data kept?
No — EXIF data such as location isn't carried over, which makes the JPGs safer to share.
Does it work on phones?
Yes, though large batches will be slower than on a computer.
